Day 181, Year 1
Be Wary of Gradually Turning Away from the Way of God
“For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.” (2 Peter 2:21 NASB)
People often turn away from the way of righteousness either suddenly or gradually. Some people, when they first come to faith, are already uncertain about fully accepting God’s Word. They often focus on others’ incorrect teachings or their own weaknesses, thus selectively accepting some parts of God’s words while rejecting others. In other words, they obey Jesus in some areas while disobeying in others. Such people have yet to truly receive God’s full gospel or abundant life, and thus become nominal Christians only. So, new believers need to diligently read the Bible, comprehensively and accurately understand its meanings, and earnestly follow the Lord’s teachings.
Some people initially have strong faith in and obedience to Jesus. Over time, twists and turns in life lead them to accumulate discontentment toward Him, but they do not address it. Moreover, they pray for various things, but feel as though He does not often hear their prayers. Finally, they choose to walk away from Him. Similarly, some encounter major crises, but feeling a lack of Jesus’ help, they cease to believe in Him. Conversely, we as true believers earnestly seek to understand His will in all situations, critically examine our lusts, practice self-denial, and even accept the hardships allowed by God so as to gain insights and transformation to advance in the journey of faith.
In addition, some people do not guard against the temptations from minor sins after believing in Jesus and eventually find themselves on the path of forsaking God. Judas, for instance, who betrayed Jesus, initially stole money from the fund of Jesus and the disciples (John 12:6). Eventually, he betrayed Him. This case demonstrates that even those who sincerely believe in Jesus could succumb to the temptation of money. Thus, we should be vigilant against the temptations of devils, resist them, and not yield to evil or any demonic influences, since indulging in minor sins would eventually lead us down the path of forsaking God.
All of the situations aforementioned should be addressed as they emerge initially. We should always confess honestly to God, seek to understand and obey His truths accordingly, and even seek assistance from devout and wise believers. We should always be prepared to meet crises or challenges in our daily lives and take precautions before they happen. In essence, when we heed the Lord’s voice or commands, we will not forget or lose them easily.
Reflection questions:
1) Have you accurately understood the meanings of the Bible? What are some useful methods that can help you understand it better and more accurately for application in your daily life?
2) Are you prepared to face challenges to your faith? How would you better prepare yourself for them?
