Day 207, Year 1
Liars Shall Be Destroyed
“You shall destroy those who speak falsehood; The LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.” (Psalm 5:6 NKJV)
Deception can be said to be the source of all evil, and it is the major tactic of the kingdom of darkness. Today’s verse indicates that the fate of liars is to be destroyed by God. The Hebrew word for “destroy” is ‘abad, which also means “kill, cause to perish, exterminate, blot out, do away with, cause to vanish, or cause to lose.” In other words, God will do away with all the schemes of liars, leading them astray, and ultimately exterminate them. He is the enemy of lies. Therefore, if doubts arise in believers, we should ask God to bestow wisdom and understanding to discern and dismantle all lies or evil schemes, uncovering the facts, upholding the power of God’s truth. Moreover, if you feel victimized by any lies, ask God to do justice for you, avenge you, or even to destroy all liars, especially those who cause the little ones to stumble. In times of adversity, we need to persistently call out to God. He will surely work for us soon.
The world of falsehood is a world of suffering. Covering one lie with another, liars often feel exhausted, terrified, and distraught, haunted by the possibility that their lies are being exposed. Thus, those who spend their limited lives lying incessantly are awaiting destruction, not to mention that behind every lie lurks an intention to deceive, alongside the controlling influence of the evil spirits, which eat away at the liars’ lives. In other words, they twist the vitality God has given them into words and power detrimental to themselves and others. They think they are benefiting, but in reality, they jeopardize themselves.
In fact, God is the source of all truth and truthfulness. Whoever seeks the truth will sooner or later find the Most High God. Similarly, God delights in all truths, and His version of reality can be found in truths. Thus, believers could pray to Him to reveal His truth and truthfulness when we are unsure of what the truth is. Today’s verse also highlights that God abhors all forms of deceit, including deceiving people with feyness and partial truth. In the meantime, the verse compares those who speak falsehoods and deceits to those who are bloodthirsty, perhaps to suggest that there is not much difference between these sins of the tongue and murder. When God judges sinners, their days will be filled with misery and agony afterward.
Reflection questions:
1) How do you feel that God shall destroy all who speak lies and falsehood?
2) Would you ask God for help in times of need to see through and overcome all lies and falsehoods, find out the truth and truthfulness in His eyes, and to experience the power of His truth?
