Day 326, Year 1

God’s Word Created Different Worlds

“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” (Hebrews 11:3 NKJV)

The Book of Hebrews pointed out that the elders’ faith is based on the Word of God. The audible but invisible words of God are more real than all visible worlds because the worlds were framed by His words. This is how the writers “understand” through faith that the worlds came from the Word of God. The Greek word “understand” is noeo, which means “to perceive with the mind.” In my opinion, the authors had experienced that God continued to “create” new things by His words, so they understood that different worlds were created by God’s Word.

The visible world, which is governed by the invisible divine rules and principles, operates primarily through God’s Word. His Word precedes all creation. When we believe that the invisible Word of God is more real than the visible world, we will eagerly pursue His Word and the related spiritual world. This is not to say that we don’t need to eat and sleep, but that we live for more substantial things, that is, to experience God’s reality through understanding by faith and be used by Him in the spiritual sense. We who have faith in God spend our lives seeking to understand and experience His Word and to actualize God’s promises in ourselves and others by faith. This includes a special way of knowing things in faith that we would not otherwise be able to understand. Faith brings forth knowledge and understanding, and understanding God’s Word enables us to experience Him further.

No one can know what God did or said at the beginning of the world. It is by faith that the elders perceive that God’s Word had created the world. Similarly, we understand God’s creation through His Word. We need to be familiar with God’s words in the Bible in order to discern accurately what He is saying to us today (cf. Matthew 4:4). God’s Word, coupled with our faith, creates our spiritual experiences. We need to be clear about what we receive from God and walk in Jesus’ obedient way. In this way, His promises and prophecies to individuals can be regarded as facts or substance experienced through faith. This can explain the essence of faith mentioned before. And we should deeply regard the vitality of God’s Word in our lives. Every time we read the Bible, we desire and expect a new understanding and a new experience. Indeed, without faith, it is difficult to understand His Word. Conversely, faith without relevant actions can only lead to a distorted understanding without a lasting experience of the life-changing power of God’s Word.

Reflection questions:

1) Do you believe that God’s Word is more important than anything that is visibly created?

2) What does your faith in God’s Word make you understand and experience in your life? Are you satisfied with this?
