Day 14 (Year 2)
Believers Can See Two Worlds
“And Elisha prayed, and said, ‘LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” (2 Kings 6:17 NKJV)
The preceding verses mention that the king of Aram sent an army to capture Elisha. When they surrounded the city, the young man beside him was filled with fear. Then Elisha prayed, enabling the young man to see the chariots and horses of fire surrounding them. Parallel to the visible world, there exists in the same time and space a spiritual yet always invisible world. Similarly, one of the missions Jesus sent Paul was to open the eyes of believers’ hearts, so that through Him, we can see His spiritual world, including the realm after death. Indeed, Jesus and His words exist in both worlds. The eyes of our hearts need to be opened to see His spiritual world.
The verse mentions that chariots and horses of fire surrounded Elisha to protect him. Remarkably, this spiritual army did not directly engage the earthly army. The following verses mention that the foreign soldiers’ eyes were “blinded”—they even came face-to-face with Elisha but could not recognize him, because God heard Elisha’s prayer (2 Kings 6:18). This shows that when God intervenes in the human world, He can accomplish His will through means that do not directly confront human wills or strength, bringing about His purposes even without people understanding what is happening. Typically, we who can see the spiritual realm are often more willing to set aside our desires and pray according to His will, so that His purposes can be done. We must seek to understand the wondrous things in God’s words, because a portion of His words points to the spiritual world.
Many desire God’s revelations to allow them understand the spiritual realm, especially what is happening around them. In this area, there are a few spiritual books that can serve as references. I pray earnestly, when facing difficulties or dangers, asking God to open the eyes of my heart so that I can see clearly the crux of the issues. As a result, I sometimes see turning points or coming breakthroughs, and am so grateful for God’s good purposes and guidance. Usually, when we understand the spiritual situation behind events, our hearts can not only be filled with heavenly peace, but we can also more easily know the direction for prayer and the actions we should take. Finally, we can share God’s works with those around us, testify to His faithfulness, and increase our gratitude for Him.
Reflection questions:
1) Do you desire to see the spiritual world that exists in parallel with this material or physical world? Why?
2) Do you desire to know the divine direction of significant issues so that you can pray according to God’s will? If so, how would you pray?
