Day 20 (Year 2)

Seeing Through Miracles…

Jesus said to His Disciples, “Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?” (Mark 8:18 NKJV)

The above scripture, spoken by Jesus, was in response to the disciples’ worry about not having brought any bread on the boat. He reminded them: Why had they forgotten the miracle of the five loaves and two fish that fed five thousand people? Jesus’ question challenging them about why they had eyes yet could not see was directed at their failure to see behind the miracle they had experienced, to the truth that He possessed spiritual power. Disciples then and now are amazed by the miracle of the five loaves, but it seems that very few would expect this event to happen again because they think all the miracles Jesus did were history. Contrarily, He expects believers to understand that His spiritual power can produce bread at any time, and thus there is no need to worry about not having brought bread at all.

I suggest that believers first discern whether an experience from God can occur again. This requires first examining whether the experience is consistent with God’s attributes and aligns with His Word. He had instructed His disciples to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all things needed shall be added unto us (Matthew 6:33). Therefore, disciples need not worry about the necessities of life. Furthermore, the passage before today’s verse mentions that Jesus and the disciples were on a boat (Mark 8:14). What was beneath the boat? Likely a large quantity of fish. Would it be difficult for Jesus to have the disciples catch fish to eat?

Jesus challenged the disciples’ faith because with His presence, the miracle of the five loaves and two fish could indeed happen again. I believe this is one of the reasons God calls believers into hope. In fact, in eternity, who still needs hope? The hope God promises is meaningful only when people are in despair, or at least lacking hope. Yes, there are anxieties in life, and even we believers make mistakes in our actions, but the Lord’s provision is always abundant. And He delights in helping those who trust in Him wholeheartedly. The eyes of disciples need to be opened not only to see the true Jesus in His presence, but also to see the works He will do for believers and the spiritual truths behind them. May Jesus open the eyes of all our hearts so that we can understand the true meaning of biblical miracles. They can happen to us as well because He is the Lord who loves us.

Reflection questions:

1) Do you believe that the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, or similar miracles, can still happen to you today? Why?

2) When you are in need, do you hope that the Lord Jesus will work for you and even perform miracles? Why?
