Day 26 (Year 2)
Keep a High Degree of Sensitivity of the Eyes of Your Heart
“The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” (Matthew 6:22-23 NASB)
When people’s eyes are healthy, along with the relevant nerves, photoreceptors, and brain areas, they can receive physical light. Similarly, believers must ask for God’s help so that the eyes of our hearts are opened, enabling us to receive His light, see clearly, and actively address life’s issues, thereby sustaining His light within us. Contrarily, if a person is not illuminated within, religion or faith will be reduced to mere outward rituals and other superficialities.
Jesus calls us to take care of our spiritual health and develop good spiritual discernment. Thus, it is not enough for us simply to pray for God’s help to open the eyes of our hearts. Furthermore, we also need perseverance to keep the eyes of our hearts continually open and to maintain a high degree of sensitivity. There are at least several ways to do this. First, when encountering new theories, ideas, or habits, or after interacting with newly acquainted people, sense whether the light within your heart becomes brighter or darker. We must enhance our inner spiritual sensitivity, be alert to changes of light and darkness within, and avoid things that weaken our spiritual perception. Second, during regular Bible reading, prayer, and worship of God, seek more spiritual illumination. If possible, read books or articles that help sharpen your spiritual sensitivity. Third, if God leads you, pray for the eyes of others’ hearts to be opened, and even participate in the ministry of opening eyes.
Jesus warned His disciples, particularly regarding the eyes of our hearts, that if they have been opened and have received light from God, but later become dark again, “how great is that darkness!” This was directed at those who had received God’s illumination but later rejected Him. This is like the experience of failing eyesight in old age. Similarly, spiritual eyesight can fail gradually or suddenly. As they reject God’s light bit by bit, the darkness within them expands further. When sinners love darkness and do not love God’s light, they are unwilling to pay the price for His light. Thus, their hearts gradually become dull and dark because of embracing selfish desires and evil. Conversely, the more we receive God’s truth and value the world that belongs to Him, the more heavenly light will fill us within.
Reflection questions:
1) Have you ever seen someone who suffers from spiritual failing eyesight? If so, what reminder do they offer you?
2) Which of the methods for enhancing the sensitivity of the eyes of your heart could apply to you? And how do you rely on God to overcome the difficulties you encounter in putting them into practice?
