Day 53 (Year 2)

Living on God’s Path of Light

“Others have been with those who rebel against the light; They do not want to know its ways Nor abide in its paths.” (Job 24:13 NASB)

Believers must seek to know the path of God’s light, follow His guidance, and walk in His way without turning away from His light. Often, we must first desire His light before we can follow it. When people have lived in darkness for a long time and grown accustomed to groping in the dark, it can be difficult to develop a longing for God’s light. Those who rely heavily on feelings tend to pursue only a limited range of sensations. For instance, some Hong Kong people find food tasteless or unsatisfying unless it has strong sweet, salty, spicy, or umami flavors. This pursuit of overstimulating pleasures can easily lead to addiction. Contrarily, we who desire God’s light usually need to adjust our mindsets first and expand our perception and vision.

God is pleased to give us His light, enabling us to turn from and repent of all evils and follies. He does not establish the folly of the wicked. Those who live in shadows or complete darkness are often those who have turned away from His light. But we who turn from darkness to light must first adjust our eyes. As we gradually draw closer to God’s light, we may sometimes need to pause and allow our vision to adjust. As we become accustomed to His light, we may begin to perceive much of the world around us as dim. In this way, we often respond actively to God’s calling, our words and actions then being transformed to reflect His light—no longer foolish or arrogant, but living according to His illumination. This transformation also means that we will pursue godly wisdom and discernment, drawing strength from Him to break free from cycles of oppressing others or being oppressed.

Today’s verse tells us that believers can walk on or even abide in God’s path of light, for His path is reliable and strong enough to carry us. I understand this verse as pointing us to how Jesus is the Way to the Father—the path we can both dwell in and walk along toward Him. On this path, we need to continue to move according to His direction. This requires us to have flexibility and continual adjustments, seeking and following God’s guidance, drawing ever closer to the Father, knowing the life of Jesus deeply, fellowshipping with others who walk in His light, and inviting more people onto God’s path of light. In His light, we sometimes need to pause to understand better and cooperate with His work.

Reflection questions:

1) Are you willing to adjust your vision to adapt to and follow God’s light? If so, what difficulty at first do you need to rely on the Lord to overcome?

2) Are you willing to invest significant time in understanding the path of God’s light, preparing to walk in it, and inviting others to do the same, if possible?
