Day 57 (Year 2)
God Is the Believer’s Light and Salvation
“A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?” (Psalm 27:1 NASB)
In the kingdom of spiritual darkness, the devil often uses fear or immediate benefits to tempt and control sinners. In contrast, the kingdom of God awakens our conscience and drives out our fear with His light. Therefore, those who believe in the Lord must understand our fears inside and the underlying causes so that we can cooperate with Him to drive out all our fears. Today’s scripture presents three reasons why believers need not be afraid.
First, God is the believers’ light. His light includes spiritual or inward illumination, enabling us to discern the path ahead. I understand that the light God granted allows us to know how to move forward even when we are in spiritual darkness. In such darkness, people fear unseen dangers, missteps, or hidden traps ahead. But if God is our light, even when our physical eyes cannot see or have missed anything, He can reveal any dangers ahead and help us avoid them. When we rely on God, even in times of uncertainty, we can receive His guidance through prayer and thus need not fear anyone or any unknown outcomes.
Second, God is our salvation, as confirmed by His promises. Even when believers fall into hardship or danger, He will surely deliver us. I have seen some people who once had trusted God but then gave up the faith when difficulties arose. This is so regrettable, for they lacked perseverance in praying for God’s deliverance. Indeed, His salvation does not always appear immediately after trouble strikes. His salvation or deliverance may come to us after days, weeks, decades, or even at the final moment. Thus, cultivating persistence and patience in prayers to God are often the key to experiencing His rescue in our lives.
Third, God is the defender of believers’ lives. At times, we face situations of uncertainty where we cannot clearly see God’s light. These are moments when God tests the genuineness of believers’ integrity and uprightness, as our righteousness and integrity guide us in uncertainty (Proverbs 11:3). The inner integrity of a believer—whether part of God’s original design or formed through His shaping—eventually connects to His light. Therefore, we should cultivate godly righteousness and uprightness in daily living to receive His light as we pray in times of need. I believe that those who are upright before God will surely be guarded by Him in safety in the end.
Reflection questions:
1) Do you truly acknowledge God as your light, so that you are not afraid of any spiritual darkness or evil, but can endure any uncertainty?
2) In times of difficulty, do you recognize God as your salvation and persistently pray for His deliverance? If so, how can you cultivate the qualities necessary to sustain such faith?
