Day 63 (Year 2)
Walking on the Path of Peace
“The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” (Matthew 4:16 NKJV)
“To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:79 NKJV)
Today’s first scripture introduces the focus of Jesus’ public ministry. He brings a great divine light to those in spiritual darkness and the shadow of death. The verses following it
describes how Jesus preached the gospel, called disciples, healed the sick, and cast out demons, enabling people to believe and follow Him so that they departed from spiritual darkness and the shadow of death. Consider the years before He turned thirty. He certainly possessed great spiritual brilliance, yet until the Father’s appointed time had come, his radiance was hidden. Similarly, believers must respect the Father’s timing—concealing when it is time to be concealed, and shining when it is time to shine. We must continually seek Jesus’ illumination. The believers’ light is only a mirroring of His glory.
The way of peace in the second verse is the opposite of the shadow of death. The word “peace” comes from the Greek word eirene, a richly layered term which means “security, safety, prosperity, the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and the blessed state of devout and upright men after death.” Thus, the light Jesus brings to us is an invitation to follow Him and participate in His life of light. As we closely follow Jesus’ illuminating guidance, we can be freed from the unease of darkness and the fear of death’s shadow, walking instead on God’s path of peace and prosperity. We not only receive inner peace but also transition from a life of “sitting” to a life of “walking.” We can move forward freely on the heavenly path without any hindrances. The freedom from conflict or war described by “peace” does not mean that we are spared from spiritual battles. Conversely, we are no longer at war with God and His people. The harmonious relationship with Jesus enables us to sweep away all fear of spiritual battles and the struggle against sins. Thus, we must trust and seek the Lord Jesus’ liberating work, departing from darkness and the shadow of death, and continually receiving His blessings in His presence unto final victory.
Reflection questions:
1) Because of your faith in Jesus, do you sense His great divine light in your heart? If not fully, which parts of your life still need to be opened to the Lord and have the obstacles removed?
2) Are you already walking on the path of being freed by the Lord Jesus, experiencing spiritual peace, and gaining victory?
