Day 69 (Year 2)
Are You Determined to Walk in God’s Light?
“If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:6-7 NASB)
The scriptures begin by describing those who claim to have fellowship with God yet continue to walk in darkness. They are deceiving others. This inconsistency between words and actions might be found among those who once received God’s light but later departed from the truth (Hebrews 6:4). I believe that when the Apostle John wrote this, there were indeed some people who had known God but retreated into spiritual darkness. In light of this, when we have turned from darkness to God’s light, we need deep longing, determination, and perseverance to walk steadily in His light. Without these, it is difficult for us to live in God.
The next verse encourages us to continually walk in divine light so as to be cleansed through the blood of the Lord Jesus, and maintain fellowship with Him and other true believers. Earlier in the letter, John mentions that those who know and believe in Jesus will have fellowship with Him (1:3). He warned those who know Jesus but still speak lies or do not practice the truth. Some who have known Jesus honestly and openly turn away from Him. But there are still others who pretend to be believers yet refuse to walk in God’s light. It is this latter group—false believers—that John addressed here. Jesus will seriously punish them at the end.
John states that apart from Jesus, everyone has sinned. But for we who are determined to walk in God’s light, are having fellowship with Him, and confess our sins to Him, the blood of Jesus will surely cleanse us and wash away all unrighteousness (1:9). The prerequisite is that we must confess our sins to God honestly, based on His faithfulness and righteousness, and are genuinely willing to depart from all evil and determined to live continually according to God’s light. This requires us to intentionally cooperate with God’s cleansing work in combating unrighteousness—first following His guidance to recognize the sins in our lives. Then we strive to replace them one by one with the Lord’s truth. Only in this way can we truly depart from sins. No matter how much we desire to be cleansed of sins, without God’s merciful work, we have no way to remove them.
Reflection questions:
1) How strong or deep is your longing, determination, and perseverance to break free from spiritual darkness and falsehood? If these qualities are lacking, what will you do?
2) We need to walk enduringly in Jesus’ light and have fellowship with Him to receive His cleansing. What experiences of fellowship with God and forgiveness of sins have you had?
