Day 78 (Year 2)

Believe in the Lord’s Light and Become Children of Light  

“‘While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.’ These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them.” (John 12:36 NASB)

One important goal for believers as we turn from darkness to light is to radiate Jesus’ light from our lives as we believe in Him. Jesus says we should believe in the light while we have it. This shows that God gives people His light during a certain period of time. We then must seize the opportunity and trust in His light.  Some people think they can wait until they are near death, or have accomplished certain things, before believing in Jesus. But this can be a fatal mistake. By then, they might no longer have the opportunity to believe in Him, as their bad habits of refusing Him have bound them. In the end, when they want to believe in Jesus, they find it too difficult to believe as they want.

The key point of today’s scripture is: we need to become children of Jesus’ light. However, some people receive God’s light but find it difficult to become children of the light, because they do not want to be changed by it. For instance, I have heard of some who have experienced the grace and work of Jesus, yet they cannot testify to having been changed by Him in any way. They are recipients of God’s grace but not conduits of His blessings. They absorb God’s unceasing grace with an unbelieving and corrupt heart, exploit Him for personal gain, reputation, and the trust of others. So, when they are bound by the darkness yet finally want to believe in God’s light, they have no chance to do so.

Jesus said that we must welcome God’s light to enter into our lives. We must not only drive out the darkness but also transform our identity into His children of light. When we submit to God’s light and stop trying to control His work, we yield to His light in every area and allow Him to drive away all inner darkness. In this process, we must deal with our own unwillingness, especially our reluctance to let God touch the dark corners we want to keep hidden. Those dark areas often bring pleasure, earn praise, or cause shame, and thus feel too sensitive to expose. But when God’s light comes, we must open up to Him and tell the Lord honestly how we feel. We then need to follow His example in prayer, “Not my will, but yours be done.” We pray to Jesus for His strength to follow God’s will and change accordingly. In this way, God will surely work within us, gradually making us children of His light, and His radiance will shine forth from us eventually.
