Day 144, Year 1

The Understanding Perceive Diverse Realities

“Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.” (Proverbs 20:5 NKJV)

The word “counsel” above, ‘etsah in Hebrew, can also be translated as “plan, designs, schemes, strategy, purpose, advice, or consultation.” Meanwhile, the Hebrew word for “understanding” is tebunah, the same as in the past two days’ verses. Today’s verse has at least three meanings.

First, people of understanding are skilled at interacting with and understanding others. They could also easily discern what sort of counsel or guidance they delight in. They also have the ability to read people’s expressions and moods accurately. Thus, when they encounter people with counsel within, they can know their intentions and even receive guidance through humble inquiry. They proactively approach, contact, invite, interact with people, and build friendships.

Second, they are able to have heart-to-heart conversations with others. For many, establishing friendships is not challenging, but building lasting bonds is. Today’s verse indicates that they could build friendships and also connect with people’s hearts. This allows them to “draw out” their counsel within. Besides, they seek mutual understanding among people. In contrast, some people, as mentioned previously, prefer “heartless” talks or activities. Naturally, they have little counsel or guidance within.

Third, people of understanding could comprehend diverse ideas, plans, guidance, inner thoughts, etc. While having a deep understanding of people, they are also willing to listen to others’ counsel or advice. This humble and active listening demeanor lets them fathom what people conceal deep within. Of course, the process of understanding the roots and anticipating the future requires questioning, clarification, summarizing, comparison, and even counter-questioning. The people of understanding have a keen insight into how people plan and act. Moreover, they are skilled at drawing wisdom and knowledge from diverse people. Building on the previous devotionals, I believe that believers of understanding could receive wisdom and understand spiritual matters through knowing Jesus Christ, including understanding Jesus from a human perspective. Furthermore, I believe we can acquire advice and strategies from the Lord Jesus by learning divine wisdom and understanding.

Reflection questions:

1) Are you able to accurately understand different people and connect with their hearts? If not, how would you rely on the Lord to improve?

2) Are you able to comprehend the heart of Jesus Christ through understanding different people?
