Day 157, Year 1

Wisdom and Knowledge are in the Lord

“But to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:24 NASB)

“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:3 NASB)

All wisdom, knowledge, and power mentioned in the Old Testament are embodied in Jesus Christ. He is truly the source of all blessings. For all whom God has called, Jesus will impart directly or indirectly the knowledge, wisdom, and power to us. The key is being among “the called.” “Called” in Greek, kletos, refers to those who have clearly heard the Lord’s calling to receive salvation, or more generally, at that time, those invited to God’s banquet in His kingdom. Indeed, for us who receive salvation, believing in Jesus is like attending the feast of His eternal kingdom, where we can acquire all kinds of spiritual blessings to meet all our needs.

The first verse of today implies that those who are invited and have truly accepted the Lord’s calling will enter into the life of Jesus Christ. He is our power and wisdom because He is the Great Giver. When we call upon Him always, He unceasingly imparts His wisdom and power to us. From the moment Jesus calls us, He desires to bless us. Why? Because He is the treasury of wisdom and power. As we rely on Him and pray to Him daily, He will surely grant us all we need.

“Treasure” in the second verse is thesauros in Greek, also meaning “treasury, or storehouse.” In other words, Jesus possesses all knowledge and wisdom, including solutions to every problem we face in study, work, family, etc. And the knowledge and wisdom Jesus has far exceeds what is recorded in the Bible. He knows and understands everything, even in the unbelieving world. So, we can boldly ask Him to impart wisdom and knowledge to help and guide us find His solutions.

The previous devotional emphasized believers interacting with outsiders wisely. A key point for us to bear in mind is that all wisdom is in the Lord Jesus Christ. While learning wisdom is necessary for us, it is equally vital to ask Him for wisdom when needed, since the outsiders or nonbelievers also need to hear God’s words and guidance through us. At times, He might give His people inspiration to share His words of wisdom and reveal His power whenever needed. Although this might not be able to instantly lead those nonbelievers to Christ every time, merely following His guidance to speak His words is already a spiritual blessing.

Reflection questions:

1) Do you strongly believe that Jesus, who has called you, is willing to always impart His knowledge, wisdom, and power to you more than enough? Why?

2) Have you ever shared the Lord’s words with others and thus received spiritual blessings, even feeling God’s presence?
