Day 217, Year 1

Strive to Enter Through the Narrow Door

Jesus said, “Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” (Luke 13:24 NASB)

When we dine with the Lord Jesus, it is a good opportunity for us to listen to His words.  If we always meditate on the Gospels, we can recognize His voice more clearly. If we find certain passages difficult to understand, are at odds with our existing views, or hard to put into practice, we should meditate more on them. The word “strive” in today’s verse, agonizomai in Greek, here means “to contend with fight, difficulties, and dangers, or to endeavor with strenuous zeal.” Indeed, after opening our doors to Jesus, it is easier for us to enter the narrow door of His salvation by His invitation in His presence. Entering the narrow door requires enthusiasm and effort, conquering the difficulties and dangers which the Lord permitted. In other words, it is not easy for anyone to be saved in general. Some Christians claim that believing in Jesus is easy, and that taking a minute or two in prayer and confessing a faith statement will surely guarantee entry into heaven. But is this really what Jesus meant in the Gospels?

The word “narrow” in Greek, stenos, could also be translated as “strait, or small.” A narrow door usually gives people the sense that they cannot pass through it easily while carrying large items, or that the overweight may need to lose weight to fit through it. The “narrow door” may make people feel constrained or even stuck in a difficult situation. So, if you sense that believing in Jesus is binding you and even putting you in some difficulties, it is completely normal in a divine sense. It may also be a good opportunity for you to habitually ask Him for help so as to develop a deeper and deeper reliance on Him.

Jesus pointed out that many people will have wanted to enter through the narrow door of salvation but are unable to do so in the future. This most likely suggests that each one of us has a limited time individually to enter through the narrow door. Therefore, we should seize the opportunity and try our best to enter the door of the Lord’s salvation while we still have the chance. In my understanding, Jesus sets a different time frame for everyone to enter through the narrow door. Nowadays, the number of believers who overcome all hurdles to receive Jesus’ salvation seems to be very small, because only a few understand the urgency of working hard in faith. This may lead some believers to feel lonely as they diligently pursue the faith. Anyway, God’s presence is surely better than any companions.

Reflection questions:

1) Do you think that your efforts in your faith are always pleasing to the Lord Jesus?

2) Are you willing to be bound by the Lord Jesus, undeterred by falling into any difficulties because of Him, and strive in faith to enter the narrow door of His salvation? Why?
