Day 27, Year 1 Jesus Christ Is the Truth

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.’” (John 14:6a NASB)

Previously, we mentioned that everything God does is righteous. Indeed, Jesus declares that He is the truth. Some believers think that the church represents the truth and guides people to believe in Jesus. Others believe the Bible explains the truth of salvation because it conveys an important message: Jesus Christ. The Bible is indeed seen as the channel closest to the truth, which helps us understand Jesus accurately. It provides the most accurate description of Jesus and clearly indicates who the truth is. Simply put, it was confirmed by the early church fathers that the Bible testifies to the truth, and the truth itself is Jesus. However, Jesus is far greater than the Bible.

“Truth” in today’s verse is aletheia in Greek, which has two meanings, including the objective “fact, or truth,” and the subjective aspect of “candor of mind which is free from pretense, falsehood and deceit.” By extension, it also means “personal excellence.” Jesus’ perception of reality sometimes differs from the apparent fact, such as in John 11 with Lazarus. Even if Lazarus had actually died before his assigned time, Jesus saw him as falling asleep, and He wanted to wake him up. In reality, He raised him from the dead. Thus, believers need to understand the reality as seen by Jesus. Sometimes the reality in the Lord’s eyes is different from what we see or perceive. This requires us to know Him, and understand His perspective, views, and evaluations. In fact, viewing ourselves and everything through Jesus’ eyes, comments or evaluation is one of the most substantial meanings of “choosing life.”

The most vital way to learn the truth is to know Jesus through the Bible. In addition, other knowledge and studies in the world that align with His truth are also worth noting, learning, and even practicing. We will discuss how to individually and subjectively understand the truth subsequently.

Reflection questions:

1) What difficulties do you face in knowing the Lord Jesus Christ through the Bible? If you have some, how would you resolve them?

2) Do you find any difficulties in viewing the truth through the Lord Jesus’ eyes or perspective? If any, how would you lean on Him to overcome them?
