Day 313, Year 1
Embark on the Path of Truly Relying on God
“And it shall come to pass in that day That the remnant of Israel, And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob, Will never again depend on him who defeated them, But will depend on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.” (Isaiah 10:20 NKJV)
The word “truth” in today’s scripture is the word ’emeth in Hebrew. Indeed, those who have grown up among evildoers are easily accustomed to the blows and failures that come from evil, plus habitually paying the price for doing evil. Conversely, believers need to hate evil, be honest to truly trusting in God, and then be changed by Him completely. Here are three points.
First, break free from the vicious cycle of being sinned against and sinning. In the verse, “the remnant of Israel” and those who escaped from “the house of Jacob” were left behind, and were exiled for violating God’s law. When they disobeyed His Word, they were punished and then wanted to return to Him. God’s punishment can be understood as a reminder for sinners to turn away from evil, for doing evil is indeed harmful to many. Thus, we need to develop a heart that hates evil. And we who are wise can realize the destructive power of evil without experiencing punishment, and that we can be cleansed from sins by His atonement. Conversely, God reserves the fools for punishment.
Second, God’s people no longer trust in those who mistreat us. In the description in today’s verse, nonbelievers who relied on idols defeated the Israelites. In spiritual reality, there are evil spirits behind idols. Therefore, believers need to recognize and turn away from all wickedness, no longer trusting in sinners, sins, or evil spirits, but striving on the path of God with honesty and trust. In fact, all sinners know that there is indeed some satisfaction, even pleasure, in sinning. Evil spirits are also real, and their dealings with people can indeed bring people short-term gains. However, we who are spiritually awakened will see through the deception of temporary gratification and pleasure and the price sinners have to pay, and thus be willing to turn away from all kinds of evil.
Third, honestly depend on God. Those who have been wallowing in sin might feel the abomination of deception and want to choose to be honest and stay in truth. Moreover, those who have relied on wrongdoings can now be eager to find a true and reliable God. Those who are wise in faith can see the end of the dishonest and unbelieving. The sad end of their lives sometimes surpasses that of those who have never believed in Him. Thus, honestly trusting in God is the only beneficial option for us to have long-lasting satisfaction and joy.
Reflection questions:
1) Do you need to be punished by God for your sins so as to hate evil? Why?
2) Do you think that honestly trusting in God is the best and harmless option in all your life that will make you happy forever? Why?
