Day 322, Year 1

Believing in God as Our Basis

“Just as Abraham ‘believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.’ Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.” (Galatians 3:6-7 NKJV)

As mentioned earlier, “Birds roost with their own kind,” this has a similar meaning to those who believe in Jesus and become the descendants of Father Abraham. For Abraham was a man of faithfulness in God. But one might ask: How do people today know that Abraham’s faith could also be ours? The answers to this question can be found in the words of Galatians above. Paul believed that Abraham’s trust in God could be an example for all Christians who trust in Him. Hence, whoever believes in God just as Abraham can inherit his blessings.

When people ask about what the Christian faith is, the simplest and most straightforward answer is: believing in Jesus. These three words sum up the core message of Christianity. Through thousands of years, God has been gathering a large group of people who believe in Him and also that His words will surely come true. “Believe God,” or “to have faith in God,” means a person’s belief that God’s Word will be truly fulfilled. But His words are sometimes hard to believe because they often accompany supernatural works. Indeed, what the Lord requires is to believe in His Word, His works, and His miracles.

Trust in God to be “accounted to one for righteousness” by Him is the hope of all who wish to be saved. It is impossible for God to justify human foolishness, crookedness, and wickedness. Sinners cannot receive God’s eternal blessings because of the unrighteousness in His eyes. But thanks be to God for the precious words that we can believe in Him and are totally reversed in position, so that we are no longer based on inherent foolishness, crookedness, or wickedness, but our lives are grounded in His Word. It’s like when we change our means of transportation, we no longer control where we go and at what speed. This kind of belief in God’s Word changes the hearts and minds of believers. Through this, we are no longer limited to the problems of the past or present, but can focus on what God wants to do for His sake and cooperate with His work in us and in others. Believing in God’s Word frees us from all vicious cycles of sinning to be blessed by His promises. As a result, those who believe in God’s Word can be justified before Him and receive the blessings He gave to Abraham (Galatians 3:14). These blessings are not detailed here in this devotion, but you can read the Bible and pray according to God’s promises until you receive them all.

Reflection questions:

1) Can you wholeheartedly believe that God’s Word is working within you and even perform miracles for you, and change yourself according to His will?

2) Do you think people who believe in the fulfillment of God’s Word can escape from the vicious cycle of sins? Why?
