Day 330, Year 1

Those Who Diligently Seek God

“For he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6b NKJV)

The God of the Bible is the center of everything in the world, beyond what other religions or beliefs refer to. He doesn’t want believers to mechanically or blindly repeat certain prayers, or perform rituals or benefactions for Him. Yet He wants us to have real faith, acknowledge that He is the center of everything, so that we can have direct communication with Him in spirit, and expect His rewards.

Some people have to deal with their grievances or complaints about God before coming to His presence. The following two verses are helpful. “Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” (Job 2:10b NASB). “I was mute, I did not open my mouth, Because it was You who did it.” (Psalm 39:9 NKJV) In fact, it is only when we transform our dissatisfaction with God into seeking His help that we will receive His rewards or recompense. I believe that if our ancestors paused for a while in the face of the devil’s temptation and then sought God’s help and guidance, they might easily overcome the devil’s tricks. And thus the whole history of mankind would have been rewritten.

The word “seek” in today’s verse is ekzeteo in Greek, which also means “to investigate, or to beg,” and is an active present participle. Here, the meanings of this word are threefold, namely seeking, investigating, and begging. Before we seek God carefully, we need to look into exactly who He really is. Thus, we really need to read the Bible thoroughly. When we are serious about our needs or difficulties, it is crucial to beg His help or rewards incessantly and diligently. We who have the right faith before God must obey Him and always come before Him, and will surely receive His rewards, because He is indeed generous.

At one time, I had insomnia for several days, and I was physically and mentally exhausted. Finally, when I felt the light of God shining into my heart and on my forehead, I quickly fell asleep. God is a healer, and He is the Giver too. But according to the Scripture, does begging God arouse greed in us? Possibly. But greedy people who keep praying for more will sooner or later find that they are praying to Satan instead of the true and only God! For Satan is the one who aroused greed in the first place in humans. Contrarily, when we believe that God is the center of our lives, we will pursue Him in faith and will be willing to receive His rewards. Such a person will surely not become greedy in any way.

Reflection questions:

1) Do you think God has rewarded you for your prayers? If so, will you become greedy, or will you understand His heart and mind more? Why?

2) What are you going to do in the future to investigate everything about God?
