Day 51, Year 1 The Lord of Wisdom
“In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:3 NASB)
Previously, we mentioned that believers need to overcome all obstacles to seek God’s wisdom and that wisdom in the Old Testament was said to be all-encompassing, diverse, and practical. But if people find it difficult to turn away from evil, who could they turn to for help? The answer lies in today’s verse, where “whom” refers to the Lord Jesus Christ mentioned in the previous verse (Colossians 2:2). Indeed, all knowledge and wisdom are in Him. Many people have grown accustomed to living without God, making it difficult for them to imagine praying to Jesus for a way out when they face different difficulties including those in their studies or work. But Jesus does possess all true knowledge and wisdom and He is willing to help His people. For instance, when believers pray and ask the Lord about any language or legitimate career problem, He is willing to answer us.
However, if a student prays during an exam and asks the Lord Jesus how to answer questions about evolution, or if someone at work asks Jesus how to deceive their superiors, He might not answer them. Indeed, some of the difficulties we encounter in life might not be problems at all in Jesus’ eyes, and therefore cannot be resolved. Hence, sometimes we also need to ask the Lord for wisdom to identify real problems in His sight.
In fact, anyone could pray to Him for help before wholeheartedly believing in Jesus. This includes the array of needs from turning away from evil as mentioned before. Following the previous discussion, it might be smooth sailing for believers in the initial stages of leaving the evil way. But shortly after that, we might experience a “relapse.” This occurs typically when we encounter setbacks, succumb to negative influences from peers, struggle to resist social trends, are directly attacked or tempted by the devil, etc. So, some people might easily fall back into their old ways. At such a critical moment, we must seek the Lord Jesus’ help to escape all temptations and evil ways. We should also seek help from spiritual mentors or pious veterans when necessary. The truth is—Jesus Christ is full of all the knowledge and wisdom we need and He is eager to help those who sincerely seek His help.
Reflection questions:
1) Do you believe the Lord Jesus Christ is full of all the knowledge and wisdom you need? Why?
2) Do you have faith that the Lord will answer and help you when you sincerely pray to Him? If He does not answer your prayer, what might be the reason?
