Day 53, Year 1

Asking God for Wisdom

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5 NASB)

The “you” in today’s verse refers to believers. Indeed, becoming a believer by a single decision does not automatically get any wisdom. We must seek and learn wisdom to become wiser. The verse encourages us to ask God boldly for wisdom when needed. He will not rebuke us due to our foolishness. Instead, He will surely give wisdom to those who ask Him. But please do not misunderstand. Some might interpret this verse as suggesting that God would not rebuke sinners even if they did wrong. Some might also mix with other verses, such as “God is love,” into their understanding, concluding that His love will never rebuke or even punish the wicked. But does the Scripture really say so? Not really, God does punish the wicked for their wrongdoings.

Would it be consistent with His righteousness if God did not punish those who consistently do evil? Would it be fair to the victims of the wicked if God does spare them? In fact, those who read the Bible know that God judges people, but His judgment is often delayed because He always wants to give chances for the wicked to repent.

Think about today’s verse. When we think we lack wisdom, we could boldly ask Him to grant us wisdom bit by bit. Who would consider themselves perpetually wise and need not pray to God for wisdom? Those who humbly, sincerely, and consistently ask for His wisdom will surely be welcomed by Him and receive the wisdom we need for ourselves and others. After we receive His wisdom, we need to follow her. Summarizing the verses mentioned in the previous days, if we ask God for wisdom and become more humble in order to leave the evil way, God will not rebuke us but grant us wisdom to find a way out of any predicament. Anyway, keep asking for God’s wisdom so that we all receive more power to advance on the path of salvation.

Reflection questions:

1) Do you agree that God would not rebuke those who ask Him for wisdom in general? Why?

2) Do you need to always pray to the Lord for wisdom? What changes do you need when you pray for God to grant you more wisdom?
