Day 56, Year 1
Yearning for Wisdom
“If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:4-5 NKJV)
Proverbs 2:2 mentions that we should incline our ears to wisdom. Hence, the word “her” in today’s verse refers to wisdom. When we turn from evil and do good, we have to seek wisdom and receive a new life from God so as to have a new attitude toward life. God’s wisdom grants us not only enables us to know Him better but also allows us to lead a wonderful life on earth.
I believe another meaning of today’s verse is that when we understand and fear God, we could receive more wisdom in every aspect of our lives. However, some desire to retain His wisdom and blessings after coming to know God, yet eventually abandon Him. The end for these people is sorrowful. Meanwhile, some people choose to acknowledge God but reject His wisdom in many aspects of their lives. They claim to know God, but sooner or later their lives are messy. People around them will likely be skeptical of God’s wisdom.
In reality, these two kinds of people I just mentioned do not get in line with God’s will. God’s most beautiful and good will is to have His people walk according to His wisdom in every aspect of life, and thus be blessed. As mentioned in the previous verse (Proverbs 2:2), “wisdom,” chokmah in Hebrew, includes every aspect of wisdom, skills, techniques, etc. The most substantial point here is to let the prior pursuit of our lives be fearing and knowing God. This could be done by making the Lord Jesus Christ the center of our focus because all wisdom and knowledge are in Him. Thus, the pursuit of believers’ lives, at least for a long time, is to seek Christ’s wisdom as our primary goal. And we could know God through all things, such as making our yearning for holiness replacing evil, pursuing uprightness in crookedness, and cleansing ourselves for purity in filth.… But first, we have to have a heart that earnestly seeks God’s wisdom in order to obtain it. Just as many seek riches or wealth, believers must strive diligently to seek God’s wisdom, as it holds greater value than all earthly riches. Often, wealth can vanish instantly, but God’s wisdom could accompany us for our earthly lives and beyond. For all who seek God’s wisdom, He would preserve true wisdom for us.
Reflection questions:
1) Do you think it is best to make knowing Christ Jesus the center of your life and learn various wisdoms so as to be blessed?
2) Are you willing to put in more effort to seek God’s wisdom, rather than pursuing riches or wealth in this world? Why?
