Day 70 (Year 2)
Putting On the Armor of Light
“The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (Rome 13:12 NASB)
Speaking lies and not practicing the truth (1 John 1:6) are deeds of darkness. Today’s scripture encourages believers to put on the armor of light because the day is near. Without God’s armor, we will find it difficult to win the spiritual battles against darkness. Indeed, when we turn from darkness to God’s light, we will inevitably face counterattacks from the dark forces. Since darkness refuses to receive the light (John 1:5), it likely prevents people from leaving it. Yet God’s light will ultimately prevail, and we must dare to cast off all sins and overcome darkness in preparing for the day. Ephesians 6:17 tells us that God’s word is the sword of the Spirit. I believe that all truth and facts that align with God’s word can be weapons of light. We must know and wield God’s word to nullify all dark and evil deeds, and walk in His truth.
If we find ourselves suffering in dark places, we must believe and hope that God’s light is coming very soon. With this conviction, it becomes easier to break free from all the despair that darkness brings. Today’s scripture encourages us not to be swallowed by any darkness, but to look ahead to the future under God’s sovereignty. Holding on to hope in God’s light and power at all times is a blessing for believers; it frees us from being controlled by circumstances and helps us prepare for the day God will bring. This is not self-consolation but faith that God’s promises will surely be fulfilled for us and will overcome darkness.
In practical terms, we need to seek God’s light in daily life. Although that day has not yet fully arrived, we can still find traces of the day with His light in people and things that belong to Him. Many believers already live in God’s day with heavenly wisdom and power. When we read their writings, stories, or teachings, or even spend time with them, we receive great encouragement. We must seek the weapons of God’s light—all tools of righteousness, truth, spiritual wisdom, and power—to overcome the darkness before us and allow His light to shine through us. Meanwhile, we must avoid all traps that could draw us back into darkness, including its people and situations.
Reflection questions:
1) Do you sense that the day of God is drawing near? If so, what hope, strength, and change does this bring to you?
2) What weapons of God’s light do you currently need to help you overcome darkness? Please list them one by one and bring them before God in prayer.
