Day 48 (Year 2)
When Light and Darkness Are Mixed…
“God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:4 NASB)
When God first created light, He saw that it was good. This is a judgment shared by most people; otherwise, humanity would not need to invent light bulbs and other sources of illumination. For believers, the light that comes from God is even better. Without God’s illumination, it is difficult to perceive the glorious Jesus, difficult to see the corruption and weakness in our lives, and even more difficult to see His help. When we see the darkness in our lives, that is the moment to ask the Lord Jesus to intervene.
Today’s scripture indicates that light and darkness were not initially separated, and this might also describe the situation of many believers. A mixture of light and darkness can be like light breaking through a gray sea of clouds—some brightness visible, yet still hazy. God’s light has come, but the darkness has not yet retreated. Light and darkness coexist in the believer’s heart. This kind of mixture is usually a fitting description of believers who are just beginning to receive God’s illumination, and it is the time to invite Him to work further.
Some believers have noticed what is called “sin energy”—the observation that certain people who engage in evil seem to possess an unusual power to commit and spread wickedness. This power often comes directly or indirectly from evil spirits. The darkness within a person can be understood as a distorted form of God-given life. Thus, when God’s light first enters the human hearts, many people actually feel a stronger impulse toward wrongdoing. This is because in the mixed state of light and darkness, the sinner’s darkness draws power from God’s light, resulting in a greater drive to commit more evil. This explains why some people commit even greater or more wicked sins after professing faith in Jesus.
When God first created the world, He separated light from darkness. This is something believers must also pray for after coming to faith to cooperate with God’s work. The goal is to ensure that the distorted nature and selfish desires within us no longer draw on God’s power and light. Meanwhile, we must separate the light from God from the darkness within, refusing to use His light to empower personal desires, and instead allowing His will to be accomplished. In uncertainty or unclarity, we should restrain our words and actions and avoid acting on impulse, so as not to fall into deeper darkness. But when God’s command or leading is clear, then act boldly and with all our strength.
Reflection questions:
1) Do you believe that all illumination from God is good? If so, do you consistently follow His illumination and guidance?
2) Does your life need the light from God to be separated from the darkness within you? If you are unsure how to do this, where can you seek help?
