Day 66 (Year 2)
God Gives Light to Believers in Three Ways
“When His lamp shone over my head, And by His light I walked through darkness.” (Job 29:3 NASB)
“Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105 NASB)
God’s light illuminated David’s spirit within (Psalm 18:28). Today’s two scriptures indicate that He can also kindle light above a person’s head and before his feet. These three together mean that believers can have God’s light within, above, and ahead of us. Thus, even when in darkness, as long as we have the presence of God’s light, we can walk confidently on His path with hope in His life.
The first verse emphasizes that God’s lamp shone above the author’s head, illuminating the way ahead. He guides believers so that we can safely walk through places of darkness. God’s light is key to helping us pass through darkness successfully. In some believers’ experiences, God’s light might not first be kindled within but rather outside of them. Although we may find ourselves innocently brought into darkness, we can pray for God to grant light and illuminate the surrounding darkness. Many people have pressed forward through darkness simply to get out of it, without being distracted by what is around them. Unlike those who grope in darkness, as described earlier, these people look upward for God’s guiding light. So, we need to cultivate the habit of relying on God’s light. Sadly, however, some who have walked through darkness forget God afterward.
The second verse emphasizes that God’s word is a lamp before believers’ feet, enabling us to see the dangers immediately ahead and know how to avoid them. “God’s word” refers to the words of Scripture and everything that has gone forth from His mouth. We must be familiar with Scripture to more easily discern what He is saying to us now. Based on Jesus’ experience of being tempted by the devil in the wilderness, Satan will use some scriptures to tempt us. However, I believe this kind of test is usually one that God allows for more spiritually mature believers. Taken together, God’s light can help us see both far and near. Yet we cannot always see clearly in both directions at the same moment. Sometimes we stop and look into the distance. At other times, when in a dangerous situation, we may only be able to see one step ahead with apprehension. Nevertheless, whether God’s light shines within, above, or before us, it always leads us out of darkness, out of danger, and finally into His light.
Reflection questions:
1) Have you experienced God’s light illuminating the path far ahead or just before your feet? If so, how did it make you feel?
2) God’s word is a lamp before our feet. Are you willing to pray for His light to come and help you escape dangers when in need?
