Day 309, Year 1

Truthfulness in Creation

“Truth shall spring out of the earth.” (Psalm 85:11a NKJV)

“Truth” is the word ’emeth and is also translated as “firmness, sureness, or stability.” The reality that came from the earth is based on God’s creation. Honesty is deeply rooted in the hearts of many. From an agricultural point of view, the various animals and plants that God created for human consumption or not are all very real under normal circumstances. Most edible plants grow straight, and if they are curved, they usually grow in the same direction corresponding to the prevailing wind or light. Most of the livestock raised are tame. In good seasons, the harvest of animals and plants is sure. From the perspective of growth and aging, the state of our human bodies, apart from genetic influences, is often the result of our diet, sleep patterns, and exercise habits. Our arrangements for eating and resting, etc., are an honest combination that reflects our physical condition. Therefore, in order to pursue physical health, believers must pay attention to a healthy diet and the appropriate use of health supplements while maintaining adequate rest, sleep, and exercise.

Similarly, it is natural to focus on honesty in interpersonal relationships. Who likes to be deceived all the time? Probably no one! Of course, scammers often deceive people once or twice, and when they know there will be no more chances, they will try to deceive as much as possible, whether emotionally or financially. To put it another way, they aren’t exactly liars, but they lie frequently because they cannot accept the truth, so they feel the need to lie often. Always dealing with someone who often lies is physically and mentally exhausting, and even frightening. It is because listeners would have to seek evidence to see if what they hear is true or not. In fact, the context in which people grow up at an early age is often where we first learn to be honest or dishonest.

Today’s scripture implies that God created humans to be honest in the very beginning. However, factors such as upbringing can erode people’s honesty as He created. According to the Bible, when humans accepted the devil’s lies and chose to leave God, more and more lies appeared in the hearts of many people and in societies. This situation is not pleasing to God. Conversely, believing in Jesus with the integrity and truthfulness of human’s original nature can have long-lasting and beneficial results. And Jesus will renew our character, making it more able to connect with His goodness.

Reflection questions:

1) Can you feel the truthfulness in God’s natural creations? If yes, how can you connect it with His truthfulness?

2) How would you deal with someone who keeps telling lies or deceiving others?
