Day 61 (Year 2)
The Light of God’s Life
“For You have delivered my soul from death, Indeed my feet from stumbling, So that I may walk before God In the light of the living.” (Psalm 56:13 NASB)
“No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14 NASB)
Today’s first scripture indicates that God is the light of the psalmist, rescuing his feet from stumbling and delivering him from death. In fact, every person’s life is heading toward death since the time of birth, but God will surely rescue every believer from it. For many, death is not only the eternal separation of spirit and body, but also a manifestation of the power of darkness. Death resists God’s light, leads sinners separated from Him, and causes them to suffer eternally. In other words, while death keeps devouring many, God will destroy the power of death over us.
Wherever Jesus calls believers, we must respond and submit to Him right there in time. In this way, every step we take will be firm. Even when we face perils, dangers can be averted. Following Him allows us to live in peace and not be captured in darkness. By receiving Jesus’ light, we are safe from stumbling and delivered from danger. As the psalmist testified, “But as for me, my feet came close to stumbling, My steps had almost slipped.” (Psalm 73:2 NASB) He almost fell, but finally did not. This is because of God’s light and help. Conversely, in dangerous places without God’s light, people will stumble and even die.
In Jesus, the light He brings to us is meant to enable us to live before Him. Contrarily, for those who worship the devil, they might be temporarily saved from dangers. The devil cannot give them God’s vitality, for it can only disguise itself as an angel of light, as the second verse indicates. When people sin, they accept its evil power. More tragically, the remaining strength in people’s lives will be drained by it, and ultimately they will be taken captive to hell to suffer endless pain. A Cantonese saying warns the wicked, “Beware of the tragedies happening in your final years!” This warning is for wicked people who will reap the retribution of their bad deeds in their last years on earth. In the final days of sinners’ lives, the powers of death and Satan often seize them, bringing continuous disasters without even a chance to repent. Thus, although believers experience hardship in life, walking in God’s light is far better than “enjoying life” temporarily at the expense of eternal suffering.
Reflection questions:
1) Are the powers of death and Satan mentioned above real to you? Why?
2) Do you have faith that Jesus will help you overcome all difficulties, so that even if your feet stumble, you will surely not fall? Why?
