Day 311, Year 1
God Will Retribute to All Your Evil Foes
“He will recompense the evil to my foes; Destroy them in Your faithfulness.” (Psalm 54:5 NASB)
The word “faithfulness” in today’s verse is ’emeth. The above faith declaration of David stated that God would eradicate his evil enemies. The Ziphites had gone to Saul to betray David for no reason, as stated in the very beginning of the psalm. God is willing to repay those who harm His people without cause. And He is willing to vindicate us. Thus, we should not accept any injustice, but pray to God for Him to do justice for us in every way. We must cooperate even by fighting along with Him who is willing to avenge on our behalf to actualize His justice on us.
In my opinion, the above principle of retribution can also be applied to eradicate evil inside us, especially to seek justice from God through prayers for those who cause dishonesty in us. If God created humans to be truthful at first, but then so many people love to lie and are even habitually lying, there must be some humans, and even evil spirits, who are at work in it and are accountable. Some are instigated by others to lie, some lie under pressure, and some imitate others to lie, and so forth. Some of those who experience these might have been victimized by others for no reason. Thus, believers need to ask God for retribution. In addition to punishing those who incite us to do evil, we need to ask God to destroy all evil hegemony in us, including all the evil roots of unfaithfulness. We then ask Him to forgive us for the sins we made out of ignorance according to His mercy. We need to have the determination to correct ourselves with God’s help.
God is pleased to cleanse people’s hearts and minds, and He does not like to see dishonesty and injustice. He is eager to give us truth and fairness. From this perspective, our prayers and changes of heart are meant to follow God’s will. When we realize when and for what events we began to lie, we can confess our sins to Him, imagine what would happen to our lives if we didn’t lie, and ask God to remove all evil consequences and replace them with His blessings. Furthermore, we can repeat the above steps and ask for forgiveness for all the events for which we have asked for His justice, one by one. We need to pray that the Lord will lead our minds to think and imagine how simple and easy life with an honest attitude will be, and how it will be pleasing to Him. In all these efforts to change ourselves, we need to offer our prayers, following His truth, and ask Him to guide our steps to renew our lives and change our beliefs, perceptions, and emotions accordingly.
Reflection questions:
1) Do you need God’s vindication for you? If so, where do you think you need to pray for God’s work the most at first?
2) If you have lied, can you find out when and why you started lying? Can you follow the above instructions and pray accordingly? And, after many prayers, what has changed for you?
